Suggestions for our new dogs name before my wife and kids come up with a lame one. He's small medium, black and white, sleek looking. Tad bit naughty looking but he's really sweet.

Anyone?

My vote goes for calling the dog Smokey.

But then you would have to play it 90's shows constantly to keep it happy.

And for some unknown reason the dog would also respond to being called Touch Head.

That and he would constantly be throwing his own crap all over the place.

He would also have to live in the basement surrounded by cardboard cutouts of all his sports heros and plenty of Cheetos. That and he could never meet a female dog. Wait a minute, I guess that would be OK come to think of it.

Dead related:

August (as in West)
Stagger (as in Lee)
Stella (as in Blue)
Captain (as in Trips)
Pigpen
Bear
Owlsley

Non (or only somewhat) Dead related:

Joplin
Jasper
Steve (or any one-syllable generic human name. Hilarious)
Fezzik (works better for a BIG dog; reference to Andre the Giant in Princess Bride)

Named my (late) g. shepherd Shunka - Lakota for canine. At least that's what it means East of the Missouri - Whapeton-Sioux on the border of SD/ND/MN up north. Come to find out while traveling west on the Pine Ridge res. - Shunka means 'shit-eater'. Still love the name - and it comes with a great story.

That may apply in my Arlo's case. He can go for a cat twizzler hors d'ouvre on occasion.

Never the narcissist, I can't think of anything wrong with naming your dog Earl B. Powell. We'd both be proud.

Otherwise, my dog's named Otis, but I always call him "Buddy."

Earl is a damn fine name for a dog with a disdainful, old hand face, in my mind.

doesn't matter, just something you wont be embarassed to shout down the street or across the park if the dog legs it.

What about Strider?

Sometimes the dog will tell you himself...
I have a cat named Milo ( from The Phantom Tollbooth)
My screen name is a mashup of previous pets..

Here's mr. Arlo as a pup, at the vet rescue where we found him and was tagged "Barney"

Years ago I had a buddy who named his dog Partner.
Maybe I'm weird, but I always thought that was a cool name for a dog.

East Bay Ray - call it Ray for short.

OR, just call it "Duran" (so you can have twice the fun when you have to give its first and last name).

got a black dog of indeterminable race. he came to my place 2 years ago, as a puppy, and wouldnt leave. i tried to chase him away but he kept returning. my daughter insisted that he should stay..., so he stayed

had to give him some name and since i was listening a lot to govt mule at the time badlittledoggie seemed appropriate; in short - doggie (highly original idea 4 the name)

u might call urs fritz http://www.golyakam.com/p/18-fritz-the-cat-kotu-kedi-serafettin-1972-dvdrip.html

here is doggie dressed up by my daughter for her cell phone photo session

Rider or Ryder. Ry for short. I've liked the name ever since my friend considered it for his son. And it has that GD reference to I Know You Rider.

Funny story about why my friend opted not to name his son Ryder. He is a big board sports fan, snowboard, kiteboarding, etc. He wanted to name his son Ryder, but his wife put the kabosh on that. With the last name of Naylor, well, Ryder Naylor just sounded a bit crass. They went with Burton.

My older dog's name is Marley. Got him long before the Marley & Me movie came out. Although it may be a bit trendy now. We got him around xmas and had just gone to A Christmas Carol play. Scrooge's old business partner Jacob Marley came to visit him before the 3 ghosts of xmas. Not to mention the obvious reference to Bob Marley. It's been a great name for a good hound.

And it sounds a little sweet & sly all at the same time.

Agreed. I had a dog name "Bob" in school. Some people said it weirded them out. I told them that's why I liked it.

Plus, it always struck me as very funny when someone would say "Hey, Bob just took a dump on your carpet"

I always thought that the best dog name would be Dude.

So you could say "Dude, get off the couch."

Not to mention the obvious Lebowski reference.

SPOT OR JERKY...if it's that sweet. Carney is a nice dog name, as well as Milk.

But maybe since it's b/w you could call it Copper, Mask, or Rico.... or maybe just call it Johnson
